If you can’t decide whether to wait for Windows 8 to be released before buying your next PC, then Microsoft just made your decision a little easier. Starting on June 2 when you buy a PC, they will be offering a $14.99 upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 8 Pro when it gets released in the fall. This is a strategy that Windows has used previously to ensure there is not a steep drop off in sales in the time leading up to the next OS upgrade. The fact that the upgrade is to Windows 8 Pro is indicative of Redmond’s preference for its customers to opt for the higher end version of the OS. As you recall in a previous post, Media Center will not be a part of Windows 8 but will be sold as a separate add-on for the Pro version only.
Update: Microsoft has just confirmed this upgrade offer will be valid in 133 countries. Therefore starting on June 2, anyone who buys a Windows 7 based PC will be eligible to buy a Windows 8 Pro upgrade for $14.99, this offer will be valid through to January 31, 2013. No details have been released yet on the cost of the upgrade for current Windows 7 PC owners. Source: Engadget
