Automatically skip TV commercials

If you’re like most people, you hate to sit through those endless television commercials. With the advent of Digital Video Recorders (DVR’s) most people now record their favourite programs but you still have to fast forward through the commercials. The Dish Network in the US has solved this problem with the addition of “Auto Hop” to its multi-room Hopper DVR’s. This feature edits out the commercials from programming that airs on ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox between 8 and 11 pm. It then lets the user watch the commercial free version of these programs starting at 1 am the day after they have aired. These “archived” versions are available for replay for up to eight days after they were recorded. It goes without saying that the major networks are none too happy with this new feature but it remains to be seen if they will try to block it’s use. Dish Network’s Hopper DVR service costs $10 per month which includes the “Auto Hop” feature, this is $4 more than the cost of the company’s standard DVR. This sure would be sweet on Rogers’s Next Box or Bell’s Fibe TV. Stay tuned…
