South Korea Telecom will soon be upgrading its customers’ Galaxy S III phones so that they can make voice calls over its LTE network. In this scheme, voice calls will become just another data type being transmitted on the carrier’s network therefore negating the need to have a separate service for local and long distance calls. Major carriers within the US plan to rollout their voice over LTE services in 2013 once their coverage areas expand, Canadian carriers will no doubt follow suit. Once the service is in place, carriers will no doubt find ways to compensate for lost revenue on voice plans by adding an extra fee to have the voice over LTE service.
