Well Canonical is back at it again, this time they are announcing that its popular open source software will also be available for tablets. As you recall they have already announced its availability for desktop computers, smartphones and TV’s. The tablet OS will be available on February 21, the same day as the smartphone version. It is not expected that commercial tablets with Ubuntu will be produced until late 2014 but for now it can be flashed onto to a Nexus 7 or Nexus 10 tablet. As discussed in a previous blog, a big advantage of this OS is that is able to run on all form factors; it will run on any Ubuntu tablet or any other device that has Ubuntu on it without it having to be ported. With this approach it is possible to run smartphone and tablet apps side by side on the same device providing for full convergence on all platforms. This is unlike the latest attempt by Microsoft to unite its operating system under Windows 8 as it still has separate versions for smartphones, desktops and tablets.
