Rogers Next Box and new IPG? You may want to keep your Last Box. (Update)

Update: In hopes of competing with Bell’s new Fibe TV service being offered in Ontario and Quebec, Rogers has introduced the Nextbox 3.0.  You can read more about it in a recent article on my blog by clicking here.

The Next Box was introduced by Rogers a couple of months ago and is now standard issue rental and purchase equipment for the cable provider. The new Personal Video Recorder (PVR) is basically the old Scientific Atlanta/Cisco 8642 model rebranded as the Next Box. Along with the rebranding comes new capabilities like the ability to access recordings on the DVR throughout your home with other Next Box terminals.

At the same time that the Next Box was introduced, Rogers also launched a new Interactive Programming Guide (IPG) which is being rolled out to new and older 8642 DVR’s. The new IPG brings along with it some enhancements, the most notable being a full screen HD programming guide. Gone are the black bands along each side of the screen, no doubt a welcome change to all those people with large HD TV’s. There are a number of other changes that may not be so popular especially to those used to the old IPG that has been in place and improved over a number of years.

After living with the Next Box and new IPG for a couple of weeks it is clear that this is still a work in progress and leaves a lot to be desired. Should you go out and upgrade that old 8300 and get a new 8642 with the new IPG? Well you can make your own decision after reading the list of our personal Likes and Dislikes below.

What we like:

  • You can schedule recordings of either a single episode or an entire series, these are identified differently in your Scheduled Recording as well as on the Guide.
  • You can now record a series with back-to-back episodes, something that was not possible with the old IPG.
  • In a similar manner to a computer’s file management system, your Recorded List is organized into folders.

What we don’t like:

  • The new system hesitates a lot, not only when going from one program to another in your recorded list but also when you are flipping through the Guide.
  • You can’t edit the end time when you are recording Live TV, this is especially annoying if you want to add a minute or two at the end of a program.
  • While recording programs, user choices and flexibility have been taken away and replaced by very regimented menu. An example of this is that you can only adjust starting or ending times by 5 min, 15 min, 30 min, 1 hr or 3 hr.
  • For those of you who like to create Manual Recordings you have to press the “Menu” Button on the remote and then follow a series of menus. Channel selection starts at 1 and you can only increase by one channel at a time. The start time is from the time you view the menu, then in 15 minute increments. You can only backup once, but ONLY if you have been watching that channel for more than 15 min. As for end time, it’s in 15 minute increments as well.

Some more general comments on the functioning of the IPG are:

  • Did I mention that it hesitates a lot, well it does, a lot.
  • There is no longer a frame by frame advance in forward or reverse directions.
  • During playback you can’t skip to end of program.
  • You can no longer perform a quick search of the Guide by Title, instead you are required to use the alphabetic search function accessed by pressing * on your Remote.
  • There is no longer an identification of the song title on the music channels.
  • While watching a show being recorded, you can no longer pause it while changing channels.
  • While watching a recorded program you used to be able to quickly skip through it in 15 minute intervals, this option is no longer available.

Overall, there are hardly any improvements, and what has been improved, isn’t even close to making up for the huge steps backwards. Our recommendation; don’t get the Next Box and new IPG yet, you should keep your Last Box.

  1. Sucks. The sensors can’t read the remote in a dark room. I have one in my bedroom, and after swapping it out for another, calling Rogers more than once a day, and having a techician come to my house, I was finally provided with an answer. Going back to the old box!!!!

  3. here’s how to fix your nextbox probes and any other rogers problems. switch to bell. less down time out of a month better equipment, nicer staff, and with one pvr u can hook up 2 tv’s to 1 pvr n watch different shows on each 1. no need to buy or rent another box and there online pvr manager works great and has been for yrs and u can get channels 1 at a time not like rogers u have to get a package even if it’s just for that 1 channel or most channels have to be in a package deal and… r u one of them people that up in the nite n sleep in the day then u have to deal with rogers nextbox rebooting at 2 am or something and screwing up ur shows that u have set to recorded. so my idea don’t go with rogers or switch to bell

  5. Nextbox Recommendation application… just love that Rogers forces an app on you that slows down my viewing experience and cannot be removed by the paying customer.

  6. This whole Nextbox has been one headache after another…every on demand movie has interference, huge lag times while switching functions, constantly needs to be rebooted, hate the inability to manipulate recording times to adjust for shows that run long, and don’t get me started on Rogers lack of customer service when you call with a problem. However this is not a commercial for Bell either. Seems like switching isn’t the answer – just jumping from the frying pan into the fire.

  7. Well, and here I thought I had a defective box that had to be rebooted. So I took it back and got another one. Now that one needs rebooting all the time. So I call up Rogers Customer (dis-)Service after an interminably long wait and am told that I have to leave it running for 24 hours to allow time for all the software to download.

a; Why was I never told that in the store?
b; What’s this 24 hours business? It either works or it doesn’t.

    Not a happy customer here.

  8. just upgraded to the 3.0 last month. the 3.0 sucks big. freezes, reboots… only good thing is that it records 8 shows at once. bad experience…

    • I had the same problems with mine. I exchanged it once and had a tech come in to change some of the wiring and add a powered splitter. No new problems after all this but I am not too optimistic.

      • Right after an automatic upgrade yesterday I lost about a quarter of my channels. Tech support was useless. Told be the box was not communicating with them. Could not however explain why I was getting 75% of the channels if the box was not communicating. Warranty expires 2 months ago. Tech said the box has outlived its usefulness. Why buy this box if if only good up to the warranty end? Told me they would have to charge me to send a tech out to check on exactly what the problem was. They are sending one over at no charge after they finally accepted that the channels were lost only after the automatic upgrade. Wasted an hour and seventeen minutes of my life on top of the frustration. Maybe time to switch to Bell depending on what Tech finds. Started reading about the Nextbox 8642HD and it looks like I am not unique here. The box seems to be a piece of junk.

  9. Rogers have admitted they screwed up the latest software upgrade of the Nextbox – my old Scientific Atlanta is working fine – but my Nextbox 2 is screwed with Navigatr…… I lost all my recordings – no movies or TV shows on Ch 100 – and I get audio description whether I want it or not (no settings to turn it off – the settings key – like everything else – is blank). Seems Rogers has not learned how to test…….. I am strongly considering becoming a total Bell customer thanks to Rogers ineptitude….. ps – they offered 8 free movies – big deal particularly when the movie list is blank………

    • Rogers consistently offers free channel packages or credit to accounts…this is what they do…but they don’t seem to understand that after lets say the 40th call in just about the first year as a subscriber, that if you’re service and product is real bad, giving me credit or offering me a moive pack free for a month is not going to bring my service back to me…fixing ALL THE ISSUES OF THE NEXTBOX and customer service will !!
