Adobe Lightroom for iOS update results in lost photos

It has been reported that the recent update (version 5.4) to the Adobe Lightroom app resulted in the deletion of some iOS user’s photos and presets that were not synced to the cloud. Apparently the issue has been corrected by Adobe but not before many of its users lost photos. Yikes, I can’t imagine losing photos, most of which can not be replaced. This just reinforces the need for multiple backups, both local and remote. Check out the section on Data Storage and Backup Solutions here for some ideas on implementing your own strategy.

New Google Maps version for iOS now available

Just in time for those summer road trips, Google has released version 2.0 of its popular Maps App for iOS. The new version brings: improved navigation; live traffic updates; indoor maps with directions for malls, transit stations and airports; and simple 5 star ratings and reviews of restaurants, plus content from Zagat. This update also brings for the first time, native iPad support. Another hidden feature (as it has not been fully implemented) is offline maps. This new feature is activated by typing “ok maps” into the search box, this will save the map area that you are viewing, making it available for offline navigation. This data can be cleared from your device’s cache memory by going to the “Clear application data” setting in the “Settings – About, terms & privacy” tabs. So head on over to your Apps icon on your iDevice to receive the latest update.

The Android version of the new Google Maps has been available for almost a week while the web version has just gone live today.

Acceptance rates of iOS Updates, Authorized and Not

Apple released iOS 6.1.2 to fix the Exchange calendar bug that caused large battery drain issues on February 19. Just 5 days later, 34.9% of iOS web traffic were seen as using the new operating system. The acceptance rate is pretty well unparalleled by other mobile OS’s. Most Apple device users want to get the latest version as soon as possible even though the update provides only minor bug fixes as was the case for this update. It does help that iOS devices receive their updates directly from Apple and not from their carriers which happens for most other cell phone and tablet devices. What now seems to go hand in hand with the updates to the latest mobile OS for Apple users is the downloading of the latest jailbreaking tool, eavsiOn. Now, a month after it was released, it has been reported that more than 14 million iOS devices running iOS 6.x were accessing Cydia, the jailbroken app store. The total number of Apple devices accessing the unauthorized store over the last month was up to 23 million. Not only do Apple owners like their authorized updates, but the jailbreaking has gotten so common place that, unauthorized updates are also becoming a normal part of their ritual.

Apple Update Tuesday (February 19)

Apple was certainly busy yesterday (February 19), releasing updates for iOS, OS X and iTunes. First up was an update to iOS which has received a lot attention due to a recently discovered security flaw which makes it easy to bypass the iPhone’s unlock screen. The update to the mobile OS does not address this major flaw but dealt with another related to the Microsoft Exchange Calendar that resulted in increased network activity causing a battery drain. Following on the breach of security affecting computers at Apple, it has issued a Java update for OS X which is meant for versions 10.7 and later. A new malware removal tool is also included. Finally, iTunes version 11.0.2 was released via Apple’s software update tool. The update allows users to sort songs and other content by composer, improves syncing especially with large playlists, fixes a bug that prevented some purchases from appearing in your library as well as the popular stability and performance improvements.
